What is a New Jersey resale tax exemption certificate?

Certain purchases and rentals can be made without the need to pay sales tax. You can use nails, fabric and wood to make a chair, or items that you will rent out as tangible personal property, real property, or services.

How do I get a New Jersey resale tax exemption certificate?

New Jersey Vendors need to be aware of a few things when applying for a resale tax exemption certificate. For starters, the vendor does not need to get one from their purchasers- the invoice should already identify the exempt items. Secondly, the annual resale certificate is meant to be used on items that are tax exempt based on their usage. That means that if you purchase something for personal use but then later sell it as part of your business, you can use this certificate for those transactions.

To make the form valid, the purchaser doesn’t need to highlight any of the bullet points. All that is required is to fill out the form and sign it. The address on the certificate doesn’t have to match the location address of your company. It just needs to include your business name and be up-to-date.

As long as you have all the proper information filled out, the initial copy of the certificate is sufficient- there’s no need to send in multiple copies. So if you’re looking to get a resale sales tax exemption certificate, make sure to keep these things in mind!

This certificate is also known as a tax-exempt certificate and it must be obtained by the business, that intends to buy products with an intention to re-sell. Example: If your business is A and you’re located in Florida, you will need a reseller certificate to be able to sell goods in Florida. Normally reseller’s certificate is valid within the state however there is no clear-cut answer, as a few friendly states do accept certificates from other states, to do business in their own state.

A reseller certificate can be submitted by a business. The supplier or provider of the service/goods is not authorized to charge sales tax. If the final sales exceed $100, the responsibility for sales tax falls on the re-seller. Ex. $100 worth of products are sold by business A. The reseller certificate (2A) was submitted by reseller b (2A). No sales tax is charged on this transaction. However, if the reseller sells the product for $200 or more, the $200 sales tax will be added to the final sales.

New Jersey is a state in the Mid-Atlantic and Northeastern regions of the United States. It is bordered on the north and east by the state of New York; on the east, southeast, and south by the Atlantic Ocean; on the west by the Delaware River and Pennsylvania; and on the southwest by Delaware Bay and the state of Delaware. At 7,354 square miles (19,050 km), New Jersey is the fifth-smallest state based on land area, but with close to 9.3 million residents, is the 11th-most populous and the most densely populated. New Jersey’s state capital is Trenton, while the state’s most populous city is Newark. With the sole exception of Warren County, all counties in the state lie within the combined statistical areas of New York City or Philadelphia; consequently, the state’s largest metropolitan area falls within Greater New York.

New Jersey was first inhabited by Native Americans for at least 2,800 years, with the Lenape being the dominant group when Europeans arrived in the early 17th century. Dutch and Swedish colonists founded the first European settlements in the state. The English later seized control of the region and established the Province of New Jersey, after the largest of the Channel Islands, Jersey. The colony’s fertile lands and relative religious tolerance drew a large and diverse population. New Jersey was among the Thirteen Colonies that opposed Great Britain, hosting numerous pivotal battles and military commands in the American Revolutionary War. The state remained in the Union during the American Civil War, and thereafter became a major center of manufacturing and immigration; it helped drive the nation’s Industrial Revolution, and became the site of numerous technological and commercial innovations into the mid 20th century.
